The Modern Proverbs 31 Woman Series
Part 2 – Her Household
Hey y’all! Welcome back to the Modern Proverbs 31 Woman Series. If you are joining us for the first time, Part 1 – Her Work is a good place to begin. Before we move in to Part 2, let’s do a brief recap of what we learned in Part 1.
In the section “Her Work” we discussed the Proverbs 31 woman’s duties outside of household management. We studied the verses relating to her life as a seamstress and discussed 3 traits that she possesses. The three traits include being a hard worker, being passionate about the work that you perform, and being profitable in your endeavors. Finally, we addressed how we can employ these traits as a means to living our life as a Modern Proverbs 31 Woman.
As a concluding growth point, we took the action to – “Focus on what you excel at and invest your time there.”
For this section we will be focusing on a new aspect of the Proverbs 31 woman’s life – Her Household. As with the previous section, we will be discussing her work, but this time it will be in regards to the management of the home.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all of her household are clothed with scarlet.
In days past, the convenience of grocery stores and one-stop shopping was non-existent. Different regions specialized in certain goods and in many cases was the only place where those goods were available. Merchant ships would travel to these far off lands to bring back the exotic goods that were unavailable in their host countries.
Like these merchant ships, the Proverbs 31 woman wants to find the best of the best for her family. She sacrifices her time and energy to make sure that her household is filled with the finest goods. There is no distance she wouldn’t travel when her household’s health is at stake.
In preparation for the upcoming day, she wakes up before the rest of her household and puts the morning in motion. Ready with food when the others join her, she ensures that her husband, children, and other members of her household are prepared and nourished for what the day will bring. She is the ultimate caretaker. With an altruistic and self-sacrificing attitude, her character is yet again defined by the love of her family.
Always thinking about ways to improve the financial health or her household, the Proverbs 31 woman keeps her eyes open to new opportunities. Then, when the perfect opportunity arises, she takes the time to reflect on whether it whether it will ultimately be beneficial to her family. She is smart and she is patient. Being profitable and practical, she is able to take advantage of the prospects that will benefit those she cares about the most.
There are many aspects to a well-run home. Between daily chores, bills, scheduling, maintenance, etc. it takes a great deal of time and coordination to properly orchestrate each day. The Proverbs 31 woman ensures that all of these things are taken care of.
Does that mean she has to do it all by herself? I don’t believe so and I don’t think that’s what is implied.
A husband and wife are a team. While responsibilities are dispersed differently in different households, the burdens that come with hard work should never be placed on one person’s shoulders alone. What the Proverbs 31 woman does is make sure that all of these obligations are tended to. Although she may not be responsible for everything, she does everything she can.
She is not idle.
In the dictionary being idle is synonymous with being lazy and completing tasks that have no real worth. The Proverbs 31 woman is too busy and too important to her family for her to partake in things that have no value.
When you fully dedicate yourself to the needs of your family and members of your household, you don’t have to worry about what is to come. Through preparation and planning, you can protect your home from the known and unknown. Will you be able to predict what is going to happen before it happens? Of course not, but you can place your household in the best position to deal with unforeseen trials. The people that the Proverbs 31 woman loves are her life. It is her ultimate ambition to make sure that they are taken care of to the best of her ability.
Time may change the way that we do things, but very rarely does it change the tasks that are essential to our day-to-day living. Certain activities are still necessary regardless of how we get from point A to point B. With a household, that usually includes yourself plus others. Those others may be your husband, children, family members, or anyone else that has been blessed enough to be placed under the roof of your care.
As a modern Proverbs 31 woman, our desire for the best for our household is in no way different from the virtuous women of the past. The differences are only in how we complete the tasks required to give the best to those we love. Luckily, in the world of convenience, these tasks are usually a little bit easier for us than they were for the wives of the past.
One issue that has been on the rise as of late is the struggle with obesity. Both adults and children alike suffer from the health risks associated with being obese and for some this can literally mean life or death.
The health of our family and household has to be a top priority. If you are the person that does the grocery shopping or food preparation, then you have a great deal of authority in deciding what kinds of foods are placed on the table. This is one area that can’t be overlooked. There are so many great resources for healthy recipes, meal planning, and couponing that with a little bit of extra preparation, our households can be supplied with the very best food available.
Like our counterpart, the modern Proverbs 31 woman needs to begin the day ready to rise and shine! While mornings may be the start of the hustle and bustle of the new day, it is also the first opportunity to express love to those that we care about the most. The emphasis of being up first is important because, honestly, that is probably one of the only completely quiet times of the day. While the rest of the family is finishing up their rest, you will be able to accomplish things that are just better suited for a little quiet time. Any preparation completed in the morning will kick-start the day to achieving full bloom!
Another aspect that the morning is well suited for is finding the much needed time to connect with God. Whether reading in your Bible, praying, or worshipping, the morning is sometimes that only time where you can build and strengthen your personal relationship with God.
One of the most important aspects of household management is the managing of finances in your home. Whether a saver or a spender, if you are the person in charge of the finances of your home, it is essential that you are able to allocate the earnings effectively. You don’t have to be an accountant or financier to excel at this, what you do have to be is deliberate. If you are the person in your home that pays the bills then your family is trusting and relying on you to ensure their well-being. When making purchases, avoid being frivolous, think about who or what is being benefited by the purchase, and always look for the best possible deal.
If you don’t currently have one, make a budget. You should always cultivate the financial health of your household and this can be difficult without a plan. To keep your family finances strong, learn about the best ways to save, spend, and give. Mastering the art of finances is one of the key ways to managing a well-run home.
There are certain functions of a household that, when performed regularly, will help the general flow of the day-to-day life of those that live there. Some of these are chores such as cleaning, laundry, ironing, yard work, while others are more personal such as family time, praying, and setting an example in character. For children in their early years, the home is the most influential place. It is here that the children will learn about the importance of relationships both physical (how you interact with your spouse and with them) and spiritual (how you interact with God), the essentials of work and responsibility, and how to handle situations whether they be good or bad.
To be an excellent wife, we have to be prepared, organized, and deliberate in our household management functions. When we are these things, we are able to manage any circumstance or situation that is placed in front of us. Our family is safe, secure, and comforted and we reap the peace of mind of knowing that.
