Part 1 – Her Work

Part 2 – Her Household

Part 3 – Her Family

Now that we are familiar with the day-to-day life of the Proverbs 31 woman, we will take a deeper look into what makes this woman who she is – her character.

She guards herself with strength
And makes her arms strong

She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.

She extends her hand to the poor,
And stretches out her hands to the needy.

She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the Lord,
She shall be praised.

Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.

In life many situations arise unexpectedly. Sometimes these surprises bring about something positive while other times these events can be catastrophic. Whichever of the two makes its way to her household, the Proverbs 31 woman is prepared. She doesn’t wait around for someone else to get things in order. She is strong and she is able. Although physical strength is helpful when disaster strikes, the mental strength and the ability to stay calm and collected are the attributes that keep everything under control.

With the skill gained from having learned to be a seamstress, naturally the Proverbs 31 woman is the caretaker of the clothing and linen needs of herself and her family. As the wife of a leader in the community there is an expectation as to how she presents herself both privately and publicly. While a sweatshirt and yoga pants might be appropriate for cleaning the house, it’s not necessarily the best choice for a public function. Proverbs 31 woman dresses in a way that expresses her respect for her husband and the respect she has for herself.

As a Christian we are set apart from the outside world. As the wife of a leader in the community and church, that distinction is even greater.

1 Peter 3:15 states –

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

When we prepare for the day, we have to dress ourselves both internally and externally. The Proverbs 31 woman “dresses” herself daily with the morals and values that set her apart. Acting with integrity and honor in all situations, she is the crown jewel for her husband and family.

The love and compassion within the heart of this woman does not end at the door of her household. While the care of her husband and family come first, the needs of those around her are not forgotten. Placed in a position of authority and blessed abundantly with the necessities of life, she is well placed to fill the needs of those around her.

One of the blessings that overflow to others is the kind-nature of her words. There is great importance in words that are spoken. Whether helping or hurting, building up or tearing down, we will be remembered by the words we have spoken. The Proverbs 31 woman is not only aware of the power of the tongue, but through wisdom has been able to master this power. Through her great faith and understanding, the law of kindness is always on her tongue. There is no place for gossip or coarse joking in her household. She knows that she is an example for her children and the world and chooses to shower those around her with words of goodness.

The character of the Proverbs 31 woman is best exemplified by one trait that empowers her entire living. She fears the Lord.

Her standards for her way of living go beyond the world’s teachings. She has realized her calling as a wife, mother, and worker and out of awe and respect of her Creator she follows the example laid out for her in His Word. It is this one thing that defines her above all others. Through this righteousness found in God she is able to accomplish these great things. For that purpose, her works should be praised.

This leaves us with the final challenge. How can we build and maintain the character needed to be live out our lives as a Modern Proverbs 31 Woman?

The answer to this question lies first and foremost in our relationship with God. It is the foundation for building a well-run home. The stronger that relationship is the stronger our work, household, family, and character will be. Through prayer, worship, and reading in the Bible, we can fortify this relationship and better place ourselves to face the difficulties of life.

We, as believers, are also on display. As a woman of God there is a right and wrong way to present ourselves. Although in regards to a “dress code” the appropriateness varies from person to person. We should always be confident that the way we appear to the public promotes dignity and self-respect.

The calling to give is another aspect of being a believer.

But just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

2 Corinthians 8:7

Giving is not exclusively about the donating of money. The time and effort that are given through volunteering carries a great worth on its own. The key to giving is to have an open heart and hands to those within your circle of influence. Giving to others is perhaps one of the greatest non-verbal testimonies of the love that has been given freely to us.

As a Modern Proverbs 31 woman, we have to be able to master the words that we speak. With so many different outlets to communicate, it becomes even more difficult to make sure that our words follow the law of kindness at all times. In Who You Are is What You Speak, we discussed the importance of speaking PERKS – positive, encouraging, respectful, kind, and sincere words. Through practice and repetition, we can incorporate PERKS daily. When you only have one opportunity to plant a seed in another’s life, perfecting this important art will ensure that we are always ready for these moments.

As we come to the end of this series, I pray that God has spoken to you and will give you strength to become a Modern Proverbs 31 Woman. I hope that you will take these few verses and make them your own. As we grow spiritually, let us find inspiration and encourage each other as sisters in Christ.

Through the love in our hearts, displayed in our household, we can continue to shine the light of the greatest good of all.
